Mosquito Plants
An overview of the mosquito killer and other insect control products and systems.
You’re probably here because you’re looking into the possibility of using mosquito plants, a natural repellent of the mosquito, an insect we all naturally hate. Mosquito plants are a nice change from the usual traps and expensive machines you’ll normally see. I guess you’re probably wondering the answer to the question that most people wonder about too.
Do mosquito plants work?
Before we talk about the effectiveness of the mosquito plant, let’s first go into a little background information about this plant, said to be an effective means of fighting off mosquitoes.
First of all, the mosquito plant is made up of citronella grass, which comes from China, and the scented geranium, which comes from Africa. Mixing the two together is said to create a potent blend that will keep mosquitoes away. They’re generally available for purchase in the spring, but they may be more readily available year round if you live in a warmer climate.
The first thing you’ll want to do is to figure out the placement of your mosquito plants. They’re best suited in an area where people are active. If people (or animals like a dog or anything else) walk by these and naturally brush up against them, they’ll be activated more naturally and the oil inside it will get to work. This will activate some scents in the area that people say will keep mosquitoes away from the area, as the smell is very unpleasant to them.
Another thing you can do for protection on your body is to take the oil extracts from mosquito plants and to rub some of it onto your skin. Doing this can give you a natural repellent that doesn’t have the chemicals that so many bug sprays have. If you’re someone who generally prefers organic methods, this can be a nice means of achieving what you’re looking to get done. You may want to do this a bit carefully at first to ensure that you’re not allergic to the plant itself. If you suffer from allergies in particular, it’d be recommended to apply a very, very small dose at first.
The best course of action for mosquito plants is also keeping them somewhere that’s hot and dry. This is the best environment to foster their growth and they can actually grow to be a few feet in size. The bigger they are, the more of a natural odor they’ll emit, thereby making them more effective at keeping mosquitoes away.
Mosquito plants can generally be found in nurseries, or you can try to grow your own. As far as mosquito plant prices go, they can start at as low as $5 per plant, and can go up to $50 and higher depending upon how mature they are.
You’d be surprised to know that many online retailers offer mosquito plants for sale at great prices, and they’re willing to ship them expediently to your house. This can be a good means of getting what you need, especially if your local nursery is limited in terms of options.
